Why a model release matters
If someone’s face, tattoo, hairline, or other identifying feature is recognizable in your clip and they haven’t agreed to be filmed commercially, a subscriber using that footage in an ad could (rightfully) end up in court. A signed release is the single thing that keeps you, us, and the subscriber safe.
When you need one
- Any clip where one or more people are the focus.
- Over-the-shoulder, profile, or back-of-head shots where clothing, tattoos, or accessories make the person identifiable.
- Recognizable voices, even if faces are obscured.
- Private property where the owner is in frame.
When you don't
- True incidental background: distant pedestrians, blurred commuters, silhouettes in a crowd that can’t be identified.
- Empty interiors and exteriors.
- Nature, landscapes, architecture with no people visible.
- Pets (sorry, they can’t sign anyway).
How the built-in form works
Every upload step in the upload flow asks one question: “Are there identifiable people in this clip?” If yes, we require a confirmation and we unlock the model-release form on your dashboard:
- The person’s full name + email.
- Their typed signature (we capture IP + timestamp for audit).
- A sign-off on the standard release text (below).
- Optional: a photo of a physical release form if you prefer paper.
The release is attached to the clip record forever. Subscribers who download the clip receive a copy of the release with the file so they can defend their use if ever asked.
Minors
Anyone under 18 at the time of filming requires a signature from a parent or legal guardian on top of their own (if they’re old enough to give assent). We won’t publish a clip featuring a minor without both signatures on file.
How we store it
Release records are stored encrypted at rest, linked to the specific clip, and accessible only to (a) you, (b) the subscriber who downloaded that clip, and (c) our trust & safety team responding to a legal request. We never share them publicly or list them on your profile.
Full release text
This is the exact text every signer confirms. It’s short on purpose.
BrollCollective Standard Model Release. I, [full name], confirm that I am 18 or older (or have guardian consent below). I grant the creator named above, and BrollCollective and its subscribers, a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, non-exclusive license to use my likeness, voice, and performance as captured in the specified clip in any media, including commercial advertising, social content, real-estate listings, and editorial use.
I waive any right to approve specific uses and acknowledge I am not entitled to compensation beyond what the creator and I may have separately agreed.
I retain the right to request takedown if my likeness is used in hateful, defamatory, or sexually explicit contexts. BrollCollective will honor a good-faith takedown request within 72 hours.
Signed electronically via the BrollCollective model-release form; IP hash + timestamp recorded at time of signature.
